Join me on my introduction to growing food course. You’ll spend the day immersed in our garden, learning how to create a beautiful and productive vegetable garden. The day is hands on, with opportunities to practice seed sowing and taking cuttings which you will take home with you. You’ll also be given a seasonal veg box to take home, and pots with seeds sown & cuttings taken on the course. Expect to leave bursting with inspiration, knowledge and enthusiasm!
On this course you’ll learn everything you need to start growing your own food. We’ll start with a tour of the smallholding. You’ll see the orchard & chickens, the ducks and their famous hobbit house, the coppice, willow beds, the bees, and, of course, the vegetable gardens and greenhouses. There’s a free time session just before lunch is served to give you time to explore the gardens and absorb at your own pace. We’ll cover topics like how we created our vegetable gardens, how I plan the veg patch to achieve self-sufficiency, sowing seeds, raising plants, composting and nature friendly gardening. You will learn how to garden organically by working in harmony with nature, and there will be some practical activities along the way such as seed sowing and taking cuttings. Spaces are limited to 8 per day, which I find is a small enough number to make sure everyone gets the most out of the day.
Lunch will be provided - delicious treats from the garden.
Course attendees will be given free copies of my planting plan and Growing Food eBook, to equip you with the resources you need to get growing.
I really look forward to welcoming you to Happy Smallholding!

Testimonials
In August my husband and I spent the day with Jess and a group of fellow awesome gardening enthusiasts at the Happy Small Holding ‘Learn to Grow your own food’ course. What Jess has created in such a short space of time is truly inspiring. Not only does Jess share her journey so openly throughout the day, but gives you such practical guidance on how you can create something specific to you and your own growing needs. High lights of the day for us were Jess’s wisdom, seeing the insta famous duck house in real life, meeting lovely people….and the beetroot hummus! We have continued to follow Jess’s journey - we have lots to do to be able to reach the level of self sufficiency that we hope for but the course was so valuable to helping us on our way!

Jess gough (happy smallholding) ran the most in depth short course on growing food I've ever been on. Jesse's delivery and content was so deep it could have been a three day intensive and that would have still been compact. Jess is one of the nicest people you will meet and I personally am glad to know her and I recommend her courses, workshops or lessons to everyone. She is one of the best.

We had a truly wonderful day at The Happy Smallholding. Jess was a fantastic host—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about what she does. The course was informative, helpful, and delivered in a relaxed, fun atmosphere that made learning feel easy and enjoyable. The smallholding itself is beautifully structured, with a great layout and a real sense of care for the animals, who were an absolute delight to be around. Lunch was delicious and a lovely addition to the day. We left feeling inspired and more confident—highly recommend to anyone interested in smallholding life

We had a fantastic day at the grow your own food workshop! It was such a treat to learn more about growing my own vegetables and understanding how a smallholding operates. Jess was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable, sharing so many useful tips that I can’t wait to put into practice. She was truly inspiring and made the experience even more enjoyable. It was also wonderful to meet like-minded people and spend the day in the beautiful Somerset countryside. Highly recommend!
